Icey Rain Blues
The drive home tonight sucked. Even when the roads were in decent condition people were driving way too slow.
On the plus side I got a steak tip sub on the way home and now it's just waiting for me to consume it. MMMMMM Meat.

Blog Awards
I'm fairly uncertain what I think of a lot of these different blog awards things that have been going on. Most recently is the 2002 Bloggies. Some random thoughts about this one:
In general I thought they were okay (though I thought life uncommon should have won its category). In some cases I feel like it had the same problem that many of these awards do, they tend to end up focused on some random subsets of all the blogs I read (though this gets into another topic about weblogs that I'll write about later).
Windows Sucks
Once again at work windows decides to do something lame. Somehow when my cow orker copied a file from one system to another, it forgot who owned it. So when someone else tried to access it, they couldn't. What a pain.

SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21) - Week of January 31, 2002
Let me direct your attention to the burgeoning "Slow Food" movement (www.slowfood.com). Created as an antidote to the global blight known as fast food (read Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of The All-American Meal by Eric Schlosser), this alliance promotes the conviviality that blooms when we take time and care with the rituals surrounding food. A snail figures prominently in the Slow Food logo. I recommend you adopt this creature as your mascot for the next few weeks. May it inspire you to be luxurious and unhurried and devoted to the art of living with good taste. Can I also convince you to try Slow Sleep, Slow Perception, and Slow Love? The stars recommend it.

First full day of Radio
In my first full day of being a Radio Userland user I managed to end up in the low 30s as far as number of hits my site got. This is one of the side features of being a Radio user. They track referers and number of pageviews you have for you. Maybe someday I'll get up to number one.
Quiz Time
From tif, a quiz:
Stupid People Rant
I just got in from taking care of getting my parking permit and I've decided that almost everyone else waiting in line with me was an idiot. When you walk into the parking office there is a big huge sign that reads:
The following are required for a parking permit: (1) Your car registration, (2) A utility bill addressed to you and postmarked within the last 30 days or two pieces of mail to you postmarked within the last 30 days. NO EXCEPTIONS
Despite those signs I watched all but one of the seven people in front of me walk up with inadequate identification and then complain when they wouldn't take it. Why am I annoyed with this? Because I was waiting in line behind 7 people for around half and hour. When it was time for my turn, I gave the guy my registration and my electric bill and was done in under 3 minutes. No problems at all. People suck (and most of their excuses for not having what was required were lame).
Learning Japanese
Zannah has a cool link to a site for all you anime lovers out there. The Japanese for Anime Lovers page has lessons in learning Japanese for those of you who are curious about what is really being said while you are reading those subtitles.
Car Tasks
So I need to skoot out of work a bit early today to go to the RMV to reregister my car (I paid off all my old parking tickets). Then I need to go to the Cambridge Parking Office and get my new parking permit for the year so I don't get a parking ticket later this week.
If I ever move from Cambridge I'll miss having that parking sticker. It is so handy because it lets me park in resident parking anywhere in Cambridge.

Don't worry Blogger
You haven't lost me completely. There are still things I use Blogger for currently. (1) my lung blog. I don't update this often, but will probably start to at some point. (2) my work blog. Blogger still has the best tools for group blogs. I haven't found anything else that works quite as well for a group of people. Yes, I could go and buy radio for all of them and have them use it for posting to their own pages and have a guide to them, but I think it's harder to manage (and much more expensive). I also think that Radio isn't necessarily for everyone.
One thing I found much easier with Blogger is template management. Making my way through the various template files for Radio was definitely a bit trying.
Radio ftp upstreaming
I figured out one problem with my ftp upstreaming. My linux box seems to be VERY slow responding when I ftp in from outside my firewall. My guess is that it is something in how that connection is being established. I've tried tweaking a few things and hopefully that will help.
Run Down
Ugs. I feel so run down tonight. I think it's going to be an early night to bed for me. I hate these days where I get home from work and I'm just tired. I have so much I want to do around my apartment and I just don't have the energy for it. I need to go into work a little early tomorrow so that means I'll get home early too. Hopefully I can get more done then. I want to put up some pictures of the new shelves.
Google Rocks
I love google. They just seem to have the right attitude. They don't even allow popup ads.

The Next Step
My next step in my blog world is rethink how I blog. For a while I have been struggling with just what I want my blog to be. It's kind of a mishmash of links I find interesting, my personal ramblings on blogs, thoughts on work and my life, etc. One thought I had was to keep this blog exactly like it is. But then also have a number of sub-blogs that are for things like links. This way if people only care about seeing what I'm linking to, they can.
The cool thing about Radio is that when I post I can choose what categories a post goes into. So the post ends up getting filtered out to one or more places, depending on what it has to do with.
Trial Run
Here's the trial run of running Radio for my blogging needs. As of right now all my posts will go through Radio. All my new archives will be accessable via the calendar to the right. The archive section has all my old blogger archives, which I hope to be able to add into my Radio archives. (I'm still waiting to find out if that is possible).
Let me know what you think. Most things should look exactly the same. My goal is to pull everything I use into radio as time goes on and let it handle all of my publishing needs.
Let me know what you think!
Close to Live
This site is getting very close to going live. The trick now is to find a way to import all my blogger posts from the last year, if that is doable at all.
Covering up Justice
John Ashcroft has hadthe half naked statue of the Spirit of Justice covered. As someone I know online said "What a fabulous metaphor".
Time on my hands
I need a new alarm clock. The one I have has a few fatal flaws. The first of which is, the reset button is right next to the snooze button. Who the heck thought this was a good idea. Lately about half the time when I'm hitting my clock in the morning I hit that button. Which means, no more alarm. Twice in the last two weeks I've slept fairly late without even realizing it. The second flaw is that the alarm just isn't enough to wake me up anymore. I need to get something different. Maybe a clock that pulls out a hammer and smacks me when it is time to get up.
Playing with the site, it's probably going to look broken quite a bit.
I've had dates like that.... not
Here's a sweet story of a boy who gets a dream date to his winter formal. So maybe things like that DO really happen for real.
Neat News to do with Transplants
A friend of mine pointed me at this cool article on new methods being studied to prevent organ rejection. Very cool from the looks of it. This could mean good things for me in the future.
Ftp madness
I've started having this blog sit on my main website since I can now reliably post via ftp. There still won't be much real content here for a little bit. I need to figure out exactly the way to convert my primary blog into Radio. I've been doing some tests on a single category and it doesn't look like it will be too hard, though there are still some things I haven't fully worked out.
Scripting News: One more thing before signing off for the day. Weblogs.Com will probably grow quite a bit next week because the Blogger Pro users are coming online. All kinds of new sites to explore. Incredible cooperation between two competitors. Every day I feel more and more like we're building a new layer on the Internet.

Original Spam Solution
I stumbled upon this very cool page about how someone canned the spam. It was good for a few giggles.
Weird iTunes/iPod/Firewire Drive Thing
So I tried moving all my music to my new Firewire drive. It worked great, with one exception: I couldn't sync with my iPod anymore. It just wouldn't work right. I'm going to try some more experimenting tomorrow, but it works fine when going off the internal drive. How frickin annoying.
On my own
It's days like this that I really realize my limits. I got it in my head this morning that I wanted to get some shelves from Crate & Barrel. The thing is, I haven't been able to find anyone to help me with them. So I'm considering just going to the store and seeing if they will help me get them into the car, then I can worry about getting them into the house when I get home (I want to get two of them, since they are stackable). I guess I may just be too impatient for my own good.
I started up a new category 'Gregory's Radio Tips & Tricks'. There's a lot of stuff out there about Radio that isn't necessarily well documented or obvious. This is a place for me to post about things I've learned.
More Radio
Speaking of Radio, Adam has a neat bit today about how he is customizing his desktop homepage. This is the kind of thing that I've been thinking of doing with Radio since I downloaded it.
Tuning in
While waking up this morning I suddenly figured out one reason Radio appeals to me. It's new and there are all kinds of neat things to figure out in it. It reminds me of the early days of MUDs, when many of the servers were just being designed and nobody quite knew everything you could do with them. There's a lot of cool exploring going on. Even though everything may not work exactly right, it's getting fixed and tweaked like crazy.
That being say, there is a small frustration level I'm having with it. I still can't reliably push things upstream. Adam Curry is supposedly posting some notes on what he did today, so maybe that will provide some insight for my problem. And on that note, it's time for breakfast.

Radio WIsh
I wish I knew if I could easily change the hope page interface so that when posting I could put in a topic for each post, kind of like I do by hand. It would just be a nice little shortcut to have.
Once Again
I find myself up late. Thinking about going to sleep again soon. I seem to wake up along right in the two o'clock hour. A friend of mine online said that must be when the brainwashing tape needs to be changed. They haven't gotten rid of the 'click' when the tape stops.
Grabel's Law. "2 is not equal to 3, not even for large values of 2." [Quotes of the Day]
A day of whining
OW! My back has been in a tight knot for the last day or two. I want it to just finally relax. I'm relaxing and not overdoing it at the moment.
One of those days
I'm feeling a bit out of sorts today. I think I may just need to crawl back into bed and nap and read. Bleh.
Going Pro?
Blogger has officially opened up Blogger Pro for business. It offers a fairly nice service for around $50/month (but if you sign up (but if you sign up right now it's only $35). You get priority access to servers, added security (posting via scp is coming soon!), and a couple of other features (with a long list of others coming soon).
This sets up some interesting decisions for me. I'm currently playing around with Radio and I'm really liking the looks of it. The hard part is they both handle the same thing, but not quite in the same way. I'm thinking I might give it a try for a year, since I use it for multiple things, and it does handle the whole group blog thing quite well.
Here's Dave's announcement on the categories feature I mentioned earlier: New Radio 8 feature. Now you can post to categories without posting to the home page. If you have categories enabled, there's a new checkbox, the first one, called Home Page (it effectively becomes a category). By default it's checked. Now you can easily publish multiple weblogs, going to lots of different locations, from one edit box. Screen shot. [Dave Winer: Radio UserLand]
One last thing before I go back to bed. Here's the next feature I want. The ability to add files into my www directory remotely via Radio. On the menu bar for the web interface there's this option 'Folder' that shows you the contents of that directory. Now, about 85% of the time I'm local to the machine running radio. Which is find and dandy. If I want to tweak a file in www I can easily. But the rest of the time I'm accessing Radio remotely over the web, and if I want to change a template or something I need to wait or ssh into my machine or something.
In other Radio news. It is great to see userland working so hard on the OS X issues. It now looks like some of the problems might have to do with my airport card, which seems kinda weird to me.
I haven't posted here in a few days, because I haven't had a ton to say. First off. Big things to the userland crew for being so attentive on things people are asking for.
This is another test.
Streaming looked like it might be working better, but it isn't.This is a test.
Trying out a new version to see if it fixes OS X issues.Mirror, Mirror

I've had Dates like that
Ever felt nervous about a date? Wondered if you had just the right outfit. If you should wear your hair up or down? Maybe if you need more makeup? Well you're in luck. The Pre-Date Confidence Builder will answer all your questions and boost your self confidence just in time for your date to arrive.
a cool experiment
I found a link to this over on The Mirror Project. It's the 1000 Journal Project. According to the about section on the site, The1000journalproject is an independent, privately funded social experiment. It is an attempt to follow 1000 journals throughout their travels, to see where they go, and what people do with them.. I've signed up for one. I think it definitely seems quite cool. I'm already thinking of what I could do with one if I get it.
SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21) - Week of January 24, 2002
There's an old fable about a scorpion that gets a frog to ferry her across a river, promising not to sting him. Halfway across, the scorpion stings the frog anyway. "Why did you do that?" asks the frog. "Now we'll both drown." "I can't help it," says the scorpion. "I'm a scorpion. I was born to sting." Alas, that's the way the tale ends in its original form. Let's hope that by telling you this tale, I have helped prevent you from carrying it out in real life. (P.S. In the modern version of the story, how about if we make it so the scorpion refrains from stinging until reaching the other side, where she finds a video game that allows her to sting a thousand virtual bad guys?)

Some new pics
I've been taking some more pictures here and there. I do carry my camera around a lot these days, but usually forget that I have it. I've also been thinking a bit more about how to manage the photos on my site. I really like how Dawn of journal of a.lifeuncommon.org does her lomolog. Last time I mentioned wanting to find some way to present them online I got some great suggestions, but none of them quite fit what I am trying to do. The Lomolog comes close though.
We're almost there on the upstreaming problem for some Mac OS X users. It appears to happen only when we reuse streams. And it looks like an OS bug. Always the most unlikely thing. No sarcasm. [Scripting News]
One thing that I'm finding about Radio is that there is a fair amount of stuff written on it, but little in the way of documentation on how the whole thing is put together. This is why you get a number of posts from me talking about testing out templates and things like that.
I feel like a lot of my time is spent doing things by trial and error. Which is cool because I learn neat things, but it makes a lot of things a major task to do.
Doing some work with categories today.
I received a great pointer to a discussion on categories and Radio. This is the kind of thing I actually would have loved to have seen Radio address from the start. Stories kind of address this, but I want something that more follows the whole weblog concept, just one I can post things into that is 'private'.
So hopefully this weekend I'll have some time to play with all this.
Penguin Madness
I know at least one reader will enjoy this. My friend Emily talks of penguina, goddess of the snows. It was just what I needed to read first thing this morning.
Thoughts on work blogging
For the past month or so I've had a blog running at work. One cool feature of Blogger (and one reason I'll always use it, even if I use other software for my primary blog) is the concept of a group blog. As far as I can tell, blogger is really the only system that supports this. Actually, Live Journal does too, but I don't think that works as well for me since I can't have the blog only be visible from within work that easily.
I've been thinking about ways to make this blog even more useful. The purpose of it is to provide a way for the sysadmin group to document things they are working on, tips and tricks they've come up with, important notes on things they do that may effect others, etc. People read it every day. One idea that's been in my head lately is integrating the help desk system I wrote into the whole equation. I could have a checkbox that would have any comments added to a ticket also post those comments to the blog. This way we also can submit ticket information we want to record directly from the interface we are in already (instead of having to remember to open up blogger afterwards).
At one point I thought about setting up a few different blogs for this purpose, but I think I only really need one. That also means the whole thing can be just crawled by our internal search engine daily and updated.
Mouse Update
Well, I think the mouse may be gone, but I figured out what it was so keen on getting. While cleaning last night I discovered a small empty bag of reece's pieces that had been shreded open. I think someone found a nice little snack that was in the bottom of some bag. Late night munchies for the mouse!
Luckily they are all gone, so hopefully this guy won't come and visit anymore.

New Blogrolling link
My friend Blake just started her own blog. You should stop by and take a look now and then.
Radio Free Gregory
So I've started playing around a bit with Radio. It's a blogging/content management tool that is pretty damn cool. For the time being I'm keeping a second blog for the purposes of playing with the software. My goal is to build it all into one set of pages in the end. Radio looks to be immensely powerful for doing this. I just haven't had the time to look that deep into it.
Mouse Attack
It seems to be happening a lot lately. People having mouse issues. A while back I think I posted about hearing some kind of critter in the middle of the night. Well last night I was finally getting around to cleaning up my bedroom. Sweeping out under the bed and all that (ugs dust). And I come across piles of little bits of paper and plastic. The critter had found a plastic bag with a bunch of papers in and and had a fun time chewing away at it. So now I'm wondering if this little guy is around and what he's going to do now that he has no more stuff to snack on.
Ever since that REM song I've always wondered what philomath means.
Dictonary.com's word of the day today is: philomath
Well,
I think it may be finally working. I did two big pushes where I couldn't before and they went through just fine.I may be cursing it by saying this, but if this goes through I'll be a bit happier.Knowledge Management Stuff
Evan posted about an article over at Business 2.0 about The Case Against Knowledge Management. It was an interesting read. Knowledge Management is something I've been getting very curious about lately. I've started up a K-log at work for my group and I think it has been pretty helpful. But I still think it isn't quite perfect. I had some thoughts in my head to find a way to incorporate it into the help desk system I wrote at work, so that you could immeadiately drop information in from where you were entering it.
Radio still kind of flakes now and then when I am at work, but not as much as it does when I am at home. It's still that annoying TCP error.
So I'm using Radio a little bit more now. I'm playing with it from work, since upstreaming seems to work just fine from there. Supposedly they are getting closer to fixing the problem with OS X that keeps me from publishing from home. One cool thing is that I bring my laptop into work every day and have it sitting on the work network. I just figured out today that I can access radio remotely from my PC, which is pretty damn cool.
[Adam Curry: CurryDotCom] writes "Last night I had an epiphany. I've been trying to solve the deluge of email coming into my life. Desperately trying to develop systems and flow to handle all this correspondence. Then it hit me. I need to change my own perception of mail. From today on I no longer equate email to an electronic version of my mailbox at home. I will regard email as Instant Messaging. Therefore, if I don't respond, the message will scroll off the screen and the sender will have to re-send the message top get my attention. I no longer have an 'Inbox", but merely a current list of IM's of people wanting my attention. Now to inform the world of my decision.... "
I work much the same way as Adam does, but with a level of filtering. I filter out mailing list mail to folders. I very rarely actully follow mailing lists on a day to day basis, but I do enjoy being able to work through them now and then. Also, anything addressed directly to me goes into a special folder. So in reality I end up with about 3 or 4 messages a day that are specificly for me. Everything else gets dumped on the floor and I may or may not see it.
More windows hatred
So I just lost about 3 hours of worktime by fighting with my work computer. I did something simple. I upgraded the video drivers to the latest version and everything stopped working. It sucks. Windows just bites. I know I have to deal with it for my job, but it is just so damn difficult to deal with.
can't sleep
I had a horrible time sleeping last night. I tried to go to sleep early and just ended up waking up every few hours and then not being able to get to sleep. I finally wake up around 5 and knew that if I went back to sleep I'd never get up in time for work. Today is going to be a crazy day, we're relocating back to the side of the building we just moved out of.
Oh well, if I get into work early I can hopefully leave a bit early.
Yet more snow
This morning I was up fairly early so snapped a few pictures on my way to breakfast. My favorite one is the one I took of my apartment building through my snow covered car window.
The snow was actually quite light and powdery. Which meant I was easily able to clean my car off. I was quite happy with this because I wasn't coughing my head off after doing it. I can't wait until I'm able to run around in the snow again and have snowball fights.
Frames R Us
Last night I framed my poster for Utena: The Movie. I wanted to frame the Pirogoeth poster I got but it is HUGE and I haven't been able to find a frame to fit it. I think it came out pretty well though.
It was the first time I'd put something into a frame and it came out great. Now I need to find a frame big enough for the other poster. I'm going to go and try and look at framing places tomorrow if my car isn't too snowed in.
TRON
I'm watching Tron right now. Disney just released a special 20th Anniversary edition on DVD. It's pretty nice. They did a 5.1 remix of the audio and I have to say it's pretty amazing. It would be cool to see what a movie like this would look like if done now.
Let's try an all new post.
Testing 1..2..3..What I've already learned this morning
This one falls into the 'Gregory is an idiot' category. Don't put off paying parking tickets. It sucks. And in Mass they don't let you re-register your car if you don't pay them.
Ouch
What I learned today
I learned that nobody seems to sell a frame large enough for the poster I got recently.

What should I tell myself?
I just followed link over on Dave's Scripting News that too me to mail to the future.com. You can send yourself email at some specified time in the future.
Kind of like an email time capsule.
Today's word of the day is...
sore
I had my bi-weekly massage last night and I am SORE today. My therapist said that she hadn't seen my back that tense in over a year. Figures though, it's been quite a week this last week or so.
Let's hope for a little bit less stressful week next week.
This week's Friday Five
Another week, another five.
1. What do you have your browser start page set to? A blank page.
2. What are your favorite news sites? The onion and CNN.
3. Favorite search engine? google (is there any other?)
4. When did you first get online? Oh heck, spring of 1986 or so, when I went to college.
5. How do you plan to spend your weekend? Oh heck, it's the weekend already isn't it. I haven't really thought about it. Watching DVDs and cleaning my apartment/redecorating. I discovered that I need some slightly larger frames for some posters.
(-- For more five fun, go to fridayfive.org
Happy Sakura Goodnesss
I got Cardcaptor Sakura #7 today. But the happy thing was them FINALLY releasing the 4th dvd. They got moved up right to the top of my DVD queue.
What did you learn today?
Every day you learn something. What did you learn today?
I learned that no stores in the area seem to have the battery pack/recharger for my camera.
I'm now an official Radio user.
Woohoo!Here's a retest.
Yum! Human!
From a few sources, this link about pet lizards eating their owner. I make it a rule never to have pets that consider me lunch.
I have fans?
I linked a while ago to Coincidence Design. A service that will stalk the girl of your dreams for you. This morning I got mail from 'Your Biggest Fan' pointing me at an article about it. Kinda interesting in a weird, slightly disturbing way.
SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21) - Week of January 17, 2002
"I've spent the last few years with an eraser,/" writes Ira Sadoff in his poem "Long Island," "trying to uncover the masterpiece under the canvas,/ scratching at the crusted-over surfaces." When I read this passage, I immediately recognized it as an apt metaphor for the unappreciated work you've been doing. Another way to describe your quest is to say you've been struggling to stay on the right side of cosmic law as you've carried out an extended act of creative destruction. I believe you're nearing the climax of the process, Scorpio.

It's always fun to abuse Microsoft
I think it is because they just make it too easy. Chris Pirillo posted a list of WIndows XP error codes that are hysterical. My favorite one is 003.
Sign of the month
I've seen this sign a few times and never had my camera with me to record it. I decided last night that I just had to get a picture. Not only do I think it's got a great name, I think the sign looks quite cool. (And (un?)fortunately there don't seem to be naked people working there).
The store is also next to the Judy Jetson Hair Salon, but I didn't get a good picture of that one. But every time I drive by I expect to see someone walking out with Jetsons hair.
Life's an Adventure
I lurk over on the forums of this online comedy site and tonight a bunch of folks from it are heading out to a bar in my area. I'm thinking I may show up just to meet some new people. I've got one person on the forum I tend to email with now and then, so I'd at least kindofsortof know one person there. I haven't met new people from online in so long.
More thoughts on Radio
Now that the interface that mirrors posts to sites that support the Blogger API is working I want to figure out how to tweak radio so that is the primary blog it posts to and the mirroring is for my radio site.
I figure there's a lot of different options for me here that I haven't looked into. Maybe I could have it so that I use the radio interface for everything, but at posting time can determine where it goes. Then, if it goes to my blogger site it sill ping weblogs.com for that site. If it goes to my radio weblog it will ping for that.
Of course I haven't even looked into doing any programming in Radio yet, so I don't even know if this is possible.
Testing 1..2..3
Hopefully this will show up on my blogger site also. The one downside is that it'll only ping for here.
On this day...
In 1919, the Great Molasses Flood occured in Boston, MA. 21 people were killed and 150 people were injured. Here's more information on it. I wonder if this caused major ant problems in the city.
I want a nap
Some companies have nap rooms. I wish the place I work for did. I could so do with a nap right about now.

New camera test
Last night I was up by New Hampshire having dinner with my friend Threnody and decided to take the plunge to get a new digital camera. Since I was by New Hampshire we were able to go to the Best Buy that was right over the border so that I could avoid paying sales tax. I ended up getting the Sony DSC-P50. In the end it came down to being between that and a Nikon Coolpix 775. The big tie breaker was the size. The Nikon is small in comparison. As some of you who know me well know, I have a problem with things that are 'too small'. I know myself too well. I lose things that are too small. That's why I don't have a tiny cell phone.
So here are some of my first efforts at using my camera. It already feels a little different from my old camera. The first one is where I store all my records. It used to be configured differently, but this setup makes more sense. It also gives me a little shelf space to put the books and DVDs that are currently in my queue. The second is of a plant I'm trying to kill rescue. This plant has been through a lot. I hadn't watered it in like three weeks and thought it was dead, but it's still all green and stuff so I started watering it and it's being all happy again. I want to get more plants for my apartment because it just feels like it needs more life. Though I was almost thinking of getting something fake so that I didn't have to worry about watering it. Anyone have any good suggestions on indoor plants that I can't kill (even if I try?)
Mirror Mirror on the wall
I saw this site yesterday thanks to Nari. The Mirror Project is a site of people taking pictures of themselves in anything reflective.
My favorite is the one done in the backside of an iMac.
Darkness
It's 7am and it is quite dark out. I'm confused because for some reason I thought it was lighter then this at 7am. Maybe it's just really overcast out or something but it just looks kinda creepy.
I'm going to try and take a bunch of pictures today and show a whole bunch of things from my day. We'll see how that goes. We also may have a tad bit of downtime as I move the box the website is on.
Early Mel
Today I got my copy of Mad Max on DVD. I'm pretty psyched about this because it has the original australian voices. Originally when the movie was brought out in the US they dubbed it with american actors. As a result the movie has this kind of weird feel to it. From things I've read, hearing the original voices gives the movie a slightly different feel. I can't wait to check it out.
More cool Radio stuff
Over on Dave's Scripting news there was a mention today of Radio supporting the Blogger API. On initial look, this seems quite cool, and might be an interesting way to use Radio for all my client side blogging work.
I still have lots of things I need to read up on to do with development work with Radio. Do I really want to start immersing myself into this?
Mouse Hunt
Someone pointed me at this page about someone's experiences with mouse problems. The timing was quite apropriate because an online friend of mine is also having mouse problems
Recent Images of Life
I thought I'd group these two together since they both come from the same weekend. I mentioned my new comforter yesterday. Here's a picture of it. It's purple, but not really a solid purple. It actually looks much better in my room then my old comforter, which was functional, but looked like crap. The one thing that I'm realizing now is that I need something on the walls in my bedroom. I'm not sure what will do the job right though. I'll have to see what I can dig up.
And it snowed yesterday! While the snow was coming down it was quite impressive actually. But unfortunately, it was quite wet and slushy and didn't really last that long. I want a nice snow so that I can head out and snap a picture first thing in the morning of a snow covered street. I love that first thing in the morning silence after a big snowfall. It is so peaceful.
Considering a New Digital Camera
My current digital camera is an old Olympus D-340R. It does okay, but it's a bit older, and doesn't quite interface with current software. It requires me to jump through some hoops currently to download my pictures.
So I want to replace it. But I don't want to spend a lot. I'm looking to spend $300 at the most. Is it possible to get something that is pretty decent for that price? At the very least something that is better then the camera I have now?
For those of you with kids
This was passed onto me earlier today. A little online article with some questions that ask: Is Your Son a Computer Hacker? It certainly opened my eyes!
Brought to you by your good friends at Adequacy.org.
End of day musings
I got a new comforter yesterday, it is quite cool looking I think. I'll post pictures when I get into work tomorrow.
I'm planning on crashing in about 10 minutes because I need to wake up early and go to pulmonary rehab maintenance. It's been about a month since I've gone so I'm starting to feel it a bit. This was also kind of a resolution of mine to go regularly this year, but it just hasn't quite worked out.
I watched Rush Hour 2 tonight and it was quite enjoyable. It didn't work for me quite as well as the first one, but it was still pretty good. The DVD also supposedly has a bunch of different features that I want to look into.
Off to sleep now.
WHOOOOOOOSH
Damn is it windy out. Every 5 minutes or so my windows rattle noisily and make me jump. I hope it calms down by morning.
Spring Cleaning?
So it isn't yet spring, but I'm doing the cleaning for it already. I have this stack of records that I need to get rid of and I'm just not quite sure what to do with them. I was thinking about bringing them to a used record store, but at this point I'm ready to just toss them. It's a lot of old crappy music that I bought when I first started spinning.
At first I thought that maybe it was some of the more melodic trance stuff I used to play. No, this stuff is just crap. So i think in the end I'm going to end up just having a friend help me carry it all out to the dumpster tomorrow.
Lava Lamp
So I was at Target today and they had these el-cheapo lava lamps. They were only $20, so I decided to pick one up. It's not as cool as the real thing, I'll get one of those eventually, but it will do until then. It's pretty cool. They say to run it for at least six hours the first time, so I have it churning away, and it's doing the lava thing.
It is yet another thing to make my apartment look funky. I'll have more pictures soon.
My Radio Weblog
I set up a My own radio weblog. For the moment there isn't much there beyond me getting pissed off at software that (from my view) doesn't work well. What frustrates me even more is that Radio looks like it would be very cool to use. But as it is right now, it is unusable for me. And since it just came out, it isn't like there are a lot of resources out there to get help with it.
Whew... what a day
I still haven't had much sleep, but I got a bunch of shopping done. I got a new comforter, some new sheets, a pseudo-lava lamp, a bunch of other random apartment stuff.
Now I think I need a nap so I can be rested to go for sushi if that ends up being in my cards tonight.
Weblogging into the future.
(warning: low sleep ramble ahead)
There's a been a lot of buzz in parts of the weblogging world leading up to today. Radio 8.0 was released (very) early this morning by Userland Software. It's actually pretty cool. I think for the beginning weblogger it would be quite cool.
But while weblogging is somewhat like radio broadcasting (Adam Curry), I think there are some different levels to the whole thing also. It is like pirate radio broadcasting. Adam talks about building his own transmitter when he was a kid. And this is much more how I see the whole blogging experience. I look at sights like Alexa's or zannah's and there's a level of creativity going on there beyond text. These are the sites that are as much about style as they are content (IMHO). My one problem with Userland sites so far is that they tend to all look pretty close to the same.
Things like Radio and Moveable Type are really exciting to me. They are taking the concept of something like Blogger and working on ways to give users even more control over things like presentation and content.
The hard part for me is that currently, every product out there does a portion of what I want. Movable Type has lots of keen features, but I find myself looking towards some of their new features. Radio is the one that I'm most curious about. I have so many questions as I look at it. How easy is it to build my own template, how easy is it to basicly rebuild my current site using it. I have a lot of things i do with my blog, little things like the 'cookies' or comments. They don't get a ton of use, but I do like them being a part of my site.
The other thing I don't know (and hopefully someone can share with me) is how radio works at the publishing level. One of the options you have is publishing to the radio servers. You also have the opportunity to publish via FTP to anywhere you want (can we hope for scp support soon??). The next question I have is, how do I publish when I'm away from home? The one nice thing about blogger is that I can connect to the service from work or home or my parent's place. It doesn't matter where I am. This isn't quite as much as an issue to me because I have a laptop, but for people who blog a lot and only have a PC at home this makes something like Radio less useful (or am I missing something).
Adam, I know you peek over here now and then and are a pretty serious Radio user. If you're reading right now, care to comment? Or any good pointers to resources? Is there anyone else who reads here who can answer that stuff?
All this has also got me thinking about how I blog. I like what zannah does, where she has a number of different blogs that reflect different aspects of things she writes about. /usr/bin/girl is mostly about links, voxmachina is just random moments from her life, and so on. The thing is I don't know is if I could keep up with it all (sometimes I wonder how she does it!).
So this is where I am right now, lots of thinking on this subject, lots of not really coming up with answers, lots of me just rambling after getting only 4 hours of sleep.
Getting Closer
Okay. I have a TiVo, and I love it. It's probably one of the best 'appliances' I've bought for my apartment ever. It gets used almost as much as my computer.
The problem I have with it is that I want it to do more. Here I have a box that runs linux on the inside and all I can do is watch TV with it. I want it to have ethernet also. I want it to be able to stream music off of my computer which is set up for streaming music (or play music back off of my computer like the Audiotron does).
Well, something is finally getting closer to my dream device. It's called the the Moxi Media Center and it's a combination DVD player, Digital Video Recorder, mp3 player, and does some other stuff too. Augh, it feels like I'm soon going to be left behind if I don't upgrade ;)
Slow Day
My plan today was to get some shopping done for things around my apartment. I went to the mall, but didn't really find anything I want. I did figure out a few types of things I need to get. The first is I need to look for things to help with cable management. I have a few cases of cables for things that run halfway around my apartment. It's not a bad thing, but I'd love to find something that I could run along the edges of the floor to cover wires that I have running there.
I've got almost all my records put back into my shelves and already it is making the place look a lot better. Another thing I need to figure out is what to do with my older records, the ones I don't think I'll ever play again. I almost feel like bringing them to some used record store and just saying "take 'em. I don't want them". I could even care less about getting any money for them. I just want them gone.
I think within the next week I may actually start to feel comfortable having people stop back over again. I still have a ways to go, but things are looking much better.
Friday Five
1. What was your first job I was a paperboy. I must have been in like 6th or 7th grade. I can't remember when exactly. I did it for a few years before I finally just got fed up with it.
2. How old were you when you had your first kiss? 15. I was on the way home from a school event called Mountain Day.
What was your first car? What happened to it? It was a 1985 Nissan 200SX. This was back before it just became the same thing as a 2 door Sentra. I bought it from my then girlfriend. I drove it to death. You had to remember to put water in it about once a week. I forgot after about a year and a half of having the car and it died.
What was your first concert? New Order. I never really went to any concerts until I went to college.
How do you plan to spend your weekend? Today is my Friday off, so I'm going to do some shopping for my apartment as part of my remodeling plan. Then friends are coming over tonight to help me out with anything I may need help with, and to have dinner. Tomorrow, not sure. I think I'm going to see if a friend of mine wants to come over and watch movies. I feel like I need to catch up on sleep too.

Lawrence of Arabia
I finally watched all of Lawrence of Arabia. Wow, what a stunning movie. If you've never seen it you should definitely rent it some time and check it out.
In the words of Lawrence, "i liked it."
Testing out BlogScript
I just reinstalled BlogScript and Script Menu. Hopefully, if it is all working okay this post should be showing up.
If this was an actual emergency, there would have been other instructions.
Laptop Rebuild
So yesterday I decided I wanted to repartition the drive in my laptop and reinstall OS X. After a few false starts I actually got it rocking along quite well. So I'm now in the process of getting my system back to the point it was at before, but in a much cleaner state. When I first got my laptop it was new enough that I wasn't sure how I wanted to organize stuff on it. The reinstall was good, but just took a while to install all the updates.
SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21) - Week of January 10, 2002
What have you done lately for the environment? Have you fought to bolster clean water laws, lobbied against the toxic habits of corporate polluters, or raised your friends' awareness about the rapid rate of species' extinction? According to my reading of the coming year's astrological omens, you will generate many selfish benefits by stoking your passionate concern for the health of our collective habitat. Uncoincidentally, 2002 will also be prime time for you to become extra conscientious about your personal habitat. Consider making plans to feng shui your home, treat your body with wild kindness, and summon all your creative artistry to spruce up your wardrobe.

Tivo Series 2
TiVo just announced TiVo Series 2 the other day at some big show. It looks kind of interesting, with 2 USB ports, but they didn't bother to put an ethernet port on it, you'll have to use one of the USB ports for that. Right now I'm a little skeptical on it. I want to read reports on it before I even think of it. Supposedly the one that AT&T broadband is selling is a 30 hour Series 2 box.
All Hail The King
On my way into work this morning I found out that yesterday was Elvis' birthday. Happy Birthday Elivs, wherever you may be.
Blogging Options
I am thinking that I might look at Movable Type. Yet another blogging program that I've heard good things about. I've seen a few sites that use it and they look quite nice. I'm still thinking about looking at Radio when it comes out for OS X, but I need to know more about it. For instance, I work on my laptop, but my web server is on my linux box. Does it work with linux? Can I do my work on my laptop and have it get sent to my linux box? etc.
Watch this space for more info as I figure it out.
This just in
I've received a link to information about Spy Cows. Our future is in their.. er...hands?
Snow!
Woo! Last night we got a little bit of snow. Not too much, and not as much as they were originally predicting. I don't mind it when we get little bits of snow like this. But when we get much more, cleaning off my car is a pain in the neck. For medium amounts of snow I hop in my car with a book and start it up. I let the defrost blast for a bit and then it makes pushing the snow off more easy. For large amounts of snow I call someone from my network of friends to give me a hand. (Have I said lately how my friends kick ass?)
Anyway, I guess we're really into winter now. Yay!
The end of an era?
An era of what I'm not sure, but Dave Thomas, the voice of Wendy's died last night at the age of 69.
(Note, I can't seem to get into the wendy's web site right now, but I checked around and that does seem to be the URL).
Happy Palm Goodness
I finally found my pilot after hunting around for it for days. I had been wanting to try out syncing it via the IR port on my TiBook for a while. It took a little while, since it was my first sync and it had to back everything up, but it synced up just fine. Now I have a backup of my palm on my primary use computer.
The next step is waiting for the conduit to Entourage.
Just what kind of geek are you?
The Brunching Shuttlecocks, one of my favorite online humor sites, has a picture of The Geek Hierarchy.

A bit of badtz
I hadn't put up a picture in a few days so thought I'd toss something random up. Emily got it for me when she was travelling for work one time. I think she got it in china or something. But he's been sitting at my desk ever since, helping to keep me slightly analog.
I love Badtz Maru stuff. I also got this great Badtz record bag they were selling for a bit. I was quite psyched to find that it was an actual, fully functional record bag. It gets comments many times when I bring it out to spin.
Goof Corrected?
It looks like Time Canada has pulled the apple story for the time being. This is the second time in recent history that Time has released a story a bit too early. Though, I have to say that with the exception of that goof apple has done a pretty good job of keeping things quiet about the iMac. It doesn't look like any of the stuff I've seen on the rumors sites.
Oops, someone goofed
Apple was keeping a big announcement very hush hush for tomorrow. They'd even been leading up to it all week on their web site. Well, it looks like Time Canada let the cat out of the bag. The new machine that Apple is announcing is their new iMac. I have to say, it's pretty funky looking. I like the idea of it though I think. I'll have to read more about it as more details are released.
Spoke too soon
Jess just called and her and her bf are coming down for brunch. Looks like I'll need to wake myself up after all.
A lazy sleepy day
I just woke up about an hour ago, got my ass kicked by Seymour (again), and think it may be time to go back to sleep. I haven't heard from my cousin's at all, so I'm thinking they may actually be out of town or something.
Seems like a good excuse to sleep.
A Promising Movie, Ruined
My friend Angela and I went to see Kate & Leopold this afternoon. I usually tend to enjoy the whole light romantic comedy genre, and in many ways I enjoyed this one. But the ending was just a bit rushed and had one big huge plot hole/screwup that it detracted from my really enjoying the movie. (I wish I had a good way to post spoilers on here so I could vent about it, but I'll spare everyone).
That redecorating bug
So I'm doing a little rearranging about my apartment and it is just too tiring. Normally it wouldn't be too bad, but I'm moving the shelves where my records are, which means of course, moving hundreds of records at the same time. So I move a little bit of stuff, take a break, move a bit of stuff, take a break, etc.
I think in the long ring it will be worth it though. My next big apartment thing to get is some kind of entertainment unit that will hold all the crap I have and give me room for expansion. Something that has a level of cable management would be most helpful too, as I'm doing all kinds of wacky things behind my stereo. How come nobody has come up with an entertainment system that holds everything, gives you good access to things when you need to rewire, and looks nice. My parents have this one that is really nice, it's a cabinet that you open up and the tv is on one side and the components are on the other. Once again though, the problem is that rewiring anything in it is a pain in the ass because it is HEAVY, so you can't move anything.
Anyone got any suggestions?
The Friday Five
1. You've just won a complete collection of movies staring one actor - what actor would you pick? Oh my this is a hard question. I'd probably have to say Cary Grant. Because he rules and that would also just give such an amazing range of movies. (I think my goal for picking my prize would be trying to find an actor that would get me the most movies :))
2. What was the last movie you saw in a theatre amelie - I am so waiting for this to come out on DVD.
3. What was the last video or DVD that you bought? The most recent DVD I got was Rurouni Kenshin - Wandering Samurai (the first disc of the series).
4. What movie could you watch over and over again and not get sick of? That one is a tie. Between The Philadelphia Story and The Cutting Edge.
5. How do you plan to spend your weekend? Well, after these questions, I'm feeling like hitting at least one movie. I still want to see Vanilla Sky. I also need to try and get further in Final Fantasy X

Blogrolling thoughts
Well, I've noticed a few sites have been dropping to the bottom of my blogrolling list and have been trying to figure out how to handle it. The Mac Scripting News site does still get updated almost daily, but I figure the person running it just doesn't bother. I should eventually just make it fall off into unmonitored until they do start pinging.
One interesting side effect of this is I have a tendancy not to look at a 'monitored' site unless I see that it's been updated. I use my home page as much as a starting place for myself as I do for other people to explore. I just went to Adam's site to find that he had been updating it! Time to catch up!
Angelic Layer
I was just about to leave work for home and remembered I had the last episode of Angelic Layer in my bag. So I just popped it in to watch it. I have to say that I really enjoyed this series. It's a little bit cutesy at times, but was just very enjoyable to watch. I'm very thankful to the folks doing fansubs for doing this show. For more info on the show, check out the Angelic Layer Battle Command.
Now we'll just have to wait and see if anyone picks up this series to distribute in the US, though I'd guess it won't be anytime soon since this show is so new.
SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21) - Week of January 3, 2002
The cosmic powers have an amusing challenge in store for you in 2002, Scorpio. But don't worry, I'll be laughing with you, not at you, as I watch you wrestle with your dual assignment: 1. Learn how to be innocent again, only on a higher, smarter level than you were earlier in your life. 2. Figure out how you can sincerely muster a fresh, updated capacity for having faith. The new models of both innocence and faith must not be anything like your old ones. You can't cultivate an ironic or distanced relationship with them. They have to work well for the deep, complex, discriminating person you have become.

Evan got the API for posting remotely via XML-RPC working again. Thanks! You rule!
A bit of change
Tonight when I was out I stopped by Urban Outfitters and picked up this new cover for my futon and some pillows to go with it. I'm psyched because I like the look of it and I think it adds something to the room. I want to start doing some redecorating sometime soon, starting with rearranging how I have my records. Hopefully when I am done I can show some cool pictures of the whole thing.
On an unrelated note, I've been bouncing back and forth into OS 9 to get pictures again for the site, because I think having the images adds a lot to the feel of the site.
First test of the New Year
This one comes from Becky's blog. It's the IPIP-NEO personality inventory. It's an interesting quiz that scores you in the areas of extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to new experiences. I'm still not quite sure what I think of the results, but as usual with these personality tests it does provide food for thought.

Moments of NYE
Just to show that I'm not the only one who will spend time stuck in front of a laptop screen during a party. Here's a picture of my friend Jeff at his NYE party. It was quite cool. The other great thing about the party was I got to see some folks I hadn't seen before. One of them was the third member of the Transcasts crew, Joe. I hadn't seen him since he moved to New York a year or so ago.
Next we have a picture of right after the stroke of midnight at Hartley. Everyone had crowded into the room and the song that was on just went into a breakdown, the timing was perfect. Both parties were so much fun. I wish I could have spent the whole night at each one.
As far as things like resolutions go, I'm currently not making any solid ones. Just kind of a general sense of improving my health overall in the coming months, and focusing on getting better after my transplant. I think that will be more then enough to keep me busy for quite a while. :)
Ego Surfing Blues
Back when I got my domain name, ezoons.com, I got it because snooze.com was taken. So just recently I got a few IMs from this guy who was accusing me of being a hacker and spamming him and stuff like that. I decided to search on google for ezoons and it seems that there is some guy out there who goes by ezoons who is known for hacking web pages and stuff. Oh well, if anyone was wondering, it isn't me.
Macross
I just got the boxed set of this that I ordered months ago. It finally got released right around christmas and took a while to get to me. I'll be psyched to check it out when I get home and see how it is different from what was released here as Robotech. In other DVD news I've been going through and cleaning out the DVDs that I'm not as interested in anymore and will probably try and sell a few online or give them away to friends who are interested in them.
Bah
I got into work today to discover that for some reason I can't get into my machine at home. I'm not sure if it is my router box there or if I maybe got renumbered after I left for work this morning. Oh well, I didn't need to get any email today anyways.
Back to work
I'm about to head out the door and back to work after a bit of a vacation. I don't wanna go. I was enjoying my time off too much, which probably means I need another week of vacation.
New Years Recap
Once again quite a night. There's something about parties at Hartley that are just quite special. Beginning of the night was spent at my friend Jeff's place enjoying some good food and company. Then around 11 I zoomed off to Hartley. Lots of people I hadn't seen in ages were there, including my friend Amy who had moved to San Fran earlier this year.
Was at Hartley till 6 this morning. Spun two different sets (the second was so much much better then the first, at least in my opinion). Got to watch some random drunk guy who somehow found the party be obnoxious and get asked to leave. (I still don't see how someone can stumble across a party and feel that it is acceptable to just go into a strangers house and harass people there).
All and all a great night. Then I went to sleep and had dreams that I had Spider Man powers. It was quite cool.
Happy New Year
I just got in, I can barely keep my eyes open. It's time to crawl into bed and sleep finally. When I get up I'll post a picture or two and talk about the grand experience that was my new years.
I hope everyone had a really good time!
