Chuck on DVD
I was looking over at ToonZone and saw mention that WB is considering releasing some old looney tunes on DVD. FINALLY.
Death by videogame
A woman in Baton Rouge, Louisiana is suing Nintendo for "unspecified damages" after her 30-year old son died during a marathon session on his N64. I'm sorry. I just find this just plain silly. I've had various consoles for years and I remember warnings about seizures going back to the Sega Genesis. It isn't like this is any new news. I really wish things like this would just get thrown right out of the courts.

SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21) - Week of February 28, 2002
I'm always delighted, Scorpio, when you "let your love be like misty rain, coming softly but flooding the river" -- as the Madagascan proverb says. Of course, I'm also enchanted when you invoke the harder-edged romantic ethic summed up by outlaw writer William S. Burroughs: "If I had my way we'd sleep every night all wrapped around each other like rattlesnakes." According to my reading of the astrological omens, both these approaches to amour will be in full bloom during the coming weeks, as well as others you're not so familiar with. May you mix and match them with the skill of a master alchemist.

Jive Talkin'
I had BBCA on this morning when I woke up, watching the news. I kept the TV as I was getting ready for work, and suddenly, the BeeGees were performing on my TV. Yikes!
Amazon goodness
I got a great order from Amazon in today. I finally got a copy of High and Low on DVD and a copy of Nick Mamatas' Northern Gothic. High and Low is an amazing film by Kurosawa, I rented it a while ago from netflix because it was a suggestion from them and really enjoyed it. So I finally got around to getting my own copy of it. I'll write up a small review of Northern Gothic when I finish it in a few days (Though it will have to wait till after I finish The Anubis Gates).
Displaying HTML
I haven't tried this tool yet, but I just found this neat thing called sHTMLc. It is a small little win32 program for converting raw HTML into something that can display that HTML (It does things like convert < to <). I wish I'd found this a few months ago when I was writing some documentation that included HTML in it.

Between Sleeping and Waking
I distinctly remember my clock going off early this morning. And I distinctly remember reaching over. But the clock i was turning off wasn't the clock I have. As a result I turned the alarm off instead of hitting snooze. I tossed and turned for a bit and suddenly woke with a start as I realized I'd actually turned the clock off. Luckily, only a half hour had gone by.
My goal for lunch today is to find a new alarm clock. The big requirement is that the alarm reset button isn't next to the sleep button. This is one of the big design flaws with my clock.
Boogiepop
I just got done watching the last disc of Boogiepop Phantom and I must say that this series ranks high on my list. It falls into that same category as shows like Lain. Though this one has a darker feel. Parts of it almost feel like a horror series, but I wouldn't call it horror. Maybe just 'weird shit'.
Definitely one to check out if you are in the mood for something different.
Disconcerted
It's weird when you fall asleep and it is light out, and then wake up and it is almost dark out.
Speaking of Cartoons
Christine had a similar experience to me when looking for DVDs of classic Chuck Jones cartoons. I looked around for a while and while there were a lot of cartoon compilations out there they had very uninformative names like Cartoon Crazys. The reviews of these are fairly mediocre, mentioning things like missing openings and endings for cartoons. It really is a shame that there aren't any well done collections out there. I can think of a number of people who would pay decent money for a complete Chuck Jones collection. Though I could imagine getting licensing for such a thing might be a nightmare.
On the other hand, Disney has done some amazing things with some of their classic toons. I especially like the look of the Silly Symphonies one. I may actually pick up two copies of this so I can send one down to my sister for my nephew when she gets a DVD player. Anyone at Warner Bros paying attention?
Christine was also nice enough to include a link to a petition to Warner Brothers to release Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies on DVD:
Nothing like a warm apartment
I just got in from hanging out at the pool/bowling place in Davis Square. It was nice to get out for a bit, even if it was too smoky there for my liking. I got to see my friend Patty, who I just don't get to see often enough, along with Lukas, Genevieve, and a few other folks. I also stopped at the used CD shop and got a whole bunch of old CDs that I'm now sucking into iTunes.
Unmotivated
I feel like I shouldn't be hanging out around home right now, but I am so unmotivated. It's a nice day out and I just took a real short nap, only waking because my pager went off. I think I might be joining some friends of mine to play some pool later. It would be a good way to get out for a bit, and I was kind of wanting to browse around Davis Square a little anyways. I always see neat looking places when I'm out for brunch, but I'm never there when things are open.
Netflix
Well, I finally got the first DVD back from Netflix. Dropped in the mail on Tuesday and I got it back on Saturday. Not too bad, but considering that I got the email that it had been shipped on Wednesday I was hoping to get it back yesterday.
More Adult Swim Goodness
Oh yeah, and tonight Cartoon Network's second night of Adult Swim starts. Tonight we have a number of new shows on Adult Swim Action along with a number of old ones. The lineup is: Yu Yu Hakusho, Cowboy Bebop, Pilot Candidate, Gundam 0083, Outlaw Star, and Tenchi Muyo. The goodness starts at 11pm.
I'm pretty psyched about this because it's bringing yet more anime into the public eye. Though I would like to see some other kinds of shows. I think Love Hina would be a perfect fit for adult swim.
Where did the day go?
Somehow, it became 6 o'clock at night. I didn't think the nap I took this afternoon was that long, but maybe it was. For the time I was up today it looked beautiful outside. I love the sun. There's nothing nicer then being able to have my shades open and let it stream in.
I've also got some decorating ideas for my apartment I want to try out. I have blinds for the windows in my living room, but I don't like them that much. I'm thinking of getting some alternative kind of window covering, I'm just not sure what yet..
It looks like it will be another quiet weekend. I don't have any plans for tonight, most probably staying in and watching the last Boogiepop Phantom DVD. I've really enjoyed the series, even if it does creep me out.
And speaking of DVDs, I'm planning on adding my comments to my DVD list this weekend. The idea is that I'll be able to add comments (think mini-reviews) to the DVDs listed there.
PC TiVo?
Over on John Robb's Radio Weblog, he mentioned that InterVideo has a product out called WinDVR. From the looks of it, it is supposed to work just like a TiVo. Looking at it I wonder why not just get the TiVo.
Being someone who owns a TiVo, I know that mine gets a lot of use. It's on and recording stuff all the time. It's got a 30 gig disk in it that tends to be about 3/4s full. It's a nice self contained box that just works. It even downloads updates for itself when it phones home.
On the other hand. WinDVR would run on my PC (just barely). I'd need to go out and buy another disk (because a 15 gig disk probably wouldn't let me buy much. I'd need to buy a tv tuner card. And, I'd have a program that runs under windows. Judging by my past history with windows this would probably mean that I'd not want to use it while doing the only other thing I do with my PC. Playing games. I'm sure one would end up slowing down the other. So where's the benefit? The big bonus I see is that there isn't the monthly fee that TiVo has.
Some other things I just thought of. This looks like it was mostly designed to watch TV on your computer. It'll output to your TV though. It has no remote. So if one DID use it to watch TV, you'd have to get up and go to the computer every time you wanted to change the channel. Maybe if you are someone who wants to be in front of your computer every second of the day. But isn't that what laptops are for :).

Goodbye Chuck
Chuck Jones passed away yesterday of congestive heart failure. For my generation, and many others, Chuck Jones was the guy responsible for me learning about cartoon physics. The Road Runner & WIle E Coyote episodes were always my favorites of his. I would watch the Bugs Bunny & Road Runner show just for the chance to see that chases. I still shriek with laughter when I watch it.
My two favorite Chuck Jones productions though, were two Hubie and Gertie cartoons: Mouse Wreckers, and Cheese Chasers. I think they are the funniest things I've ever seen (I need to see if they are on DVD at all).
Thanks Chuck. You will be missed.

Adam Curry has once again written something really cool about blogging and Television. It's really interesting, take the time to read about the Zen TV Experiment. I'm going to have to think about all this a bit more I think.
The Golden Compass
I just finished The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. It was really good. I enjoyed it much more then the last book I read. The story was wonderful. It follows the adventures of Lyra Belacqua on her journey to find her uncle. It takes place in a world much like ours, but with some major exceptions. The biggest of which is that every person has their own personal daemon. It's a familiar that is always with them and can change into different animal forms.
I really enjoyed Philip Pullman's writing and am planning on picking up the other two books in the trilogy soon. I want to get all the ones from this printing so they'll match :)

1. Hey, baby, what's your sign? Does it fit you pretty well?Scorpio. And I like to think it fits me pretty damn well.
2. What's the worst birthday gift you've ever received?I don't know that I've got any ones that were bad. Maybe uninspired ones, but nothing bad.
3. What's the best birthday gift you ever received? Another one I'm not sure on. I've gotten some really nice things, but nothing stands out as being the 'best'.
4. What's the best way you've celebrated your birthday thus far? This one I can answer! My 30th birthday. I partied very hard and had an absolutely amazing time. It was a great night out at this pub. Since my birthday is right around halloween it was a halloween party and they brought out a cake at midnight when I turned 30. I have kickass friends.
5. What are you doing this weekend? My parents are coming up to Boston tomorrow to do some shopping during the day, then I'll meet up with them for dinner. Beyond that I'm not too sure. I thought I was going to be heading down to CT for the weekend, but I think I'm going to hang around the Boston area and see what trouble I can get into.

Netflix update
The movie returned to netflix on Tuesday arrived on Wednesday at netflix. I got the email around 2pm. Then last night at 10pm or so I got the email that my next movie had been shipped. So I'm wondering if it just took a while for the email to get to me or if I'll have it today. I bet I'll have it tomorrow at the latest. This is a VAST improvement. Because the movie returned to the west coast didn't even arrive there yet.

Buy this book!
Northern Gothic is a book by Nick Mamatas, one of the DinoMUSH crew. Wednesday morning his book was ranked 888,350 on Amazon. When I just ordered my copy a few minutes ago it was at around 4,128. Woohoo! If you're looking for something good to read, it's fairly inexpensive. At least I'm assuming it's good. I've heard good reviews of it.
Broken the Barrier
As of yesterday I've broken the barrier. I'm part of the top 100 Radio Userland sites read since 10/7/01. Okay, I'll admit it, I get a little bit of an ego boost from things like this. I actually think it is pretty cool that people come to this site to read my inane ramblings.
More Radio Goodness
I wrote my own comment system that I'm quite happy with, so this doesn't quite effect me. But the cool folks at Userland have updated Radio so that you can now have comments attached to posts. It's actually not that bad a setup. I don't think it is quite as full featured as some of the comment systems out there (It doesn't seem to show how many comments there are), but this is a good first step.
While in some cases just linking to someone's article in your own blog and commenting on it can give some response, it doesn't create as much of a sense of community. You may have some interesting little tidbit of information to add to someone's post. Maybe you can correct some faulty information. Definitely a cool move!
Augh, it happened again!
Are people that clueless? Are there people who there who just don't get enough spam to realize how annoying it is? Or do they for some reason think their mail must not be spam? Yet another person has gone and farmed through the Friday Five posts and snarfed down all the addresses. She then mailed out everyone telling them to come take her test. It sucks. It's one thing to mail to all your friends, it's another to go and find out who your neighbors friends are and start mailing them to.
The thing I wonder is do these people understand what they are doing? Do they understand just how annoying it is to get yet more spam. Is this just some need to try and have a popular site? Personally, the sites that I love the most are the ones I just stumble upon (/usr/bin/girl and a life uncommon come to mind immeadiately). Is this going to start becoming a trend? I hope not
Maybe Adam is right about email after all.
SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21) - Week of February 21, 2002
Here's a bit of wisdom I gained through hard experience last summer: When you go to a county fair, never play the throw-darts-at-balloons game and win a giant stuffed dragon at the beginning of your visit, because then you'll have to carry the bulky thing around with you the rest of the day. This teaching can serve as a valuable metaphor for you in the coming weeks, Scorpio. You're entering a phase when fun will continually flood in your direction, and it doesn't make sense to weigh yourself down with the first questionable "treasure" that comes along. Enjoy the minor thrills that arrive in the next few days, but don't pledge your undying devotion to them.

My first webring
I just joined the Boston Bloggers webring. It's my first webring. I don't see myself adding that many more though. There look to be some pretty cool blogs there.
Icky out
I just looked outside and it looks quite dark and overcast out. I really don't want more rain at this point. (I guess this is also a sign that I should pay attention to the weather more).
This Recipe came with my blender and is a great potato soup.
1 Tbs. margarine or butter
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 can (15 oz) reduced sodium chicken broth
1/2 cup water
2 cups peeled cubed potatoes
1/2 cup chopped carrots
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
Chopped fresh chives, if desired
Shredded Cheddar cheese, if desired.
Heat margarine in large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion and cook, 2 to 3 minutes. Add broth, water, potatoes, and carrots. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, until vegetables are tender, around 10 to 15 min. Cool 5 minutes.
Place cooled potato mixture in blender jar 1 or more cups at a time. Cover and blend at STIR abotu 30 seconds after each addition. Blend at PUREE about 30 seconds. Return mixture to saucepan. Add Worcestershire sauce and pepper. Simmer until thoroughly heated, about 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in cheese and cook, uncovered, over low heat until melted. Sprinkle with fresh chives and additional shredded Cheddar cheese, if desired.

Kenshin
I just got through the first disc of the Kyoto arc last night. I have to say that I'm really enjoying this show. I need to pace myself and only pick up new DVDs every other week or so. I like the kind of dark feeling that the show seems to have gotten. Even if the ending of that disc was a little sappy and angstful.
Quiet Day Today
Today I'm probably going to be pretty quiet here during the day. I'm off to an offsite meeting to talk with some consultant types. Not sure if I'll make it back into the office after that. I may just work from home the rest of the day. I've got one big document I have to finish up in the next day or so, so this would let me do it w/out distractions.
Let the test begin!
I just dropped two Netflix mailers back in the mail. The first one, is a movie I'd had sitting around for a few weeks and still goes back to San Jose. Evan Williams has a swanky new design for Evhead. I think this one looks pretty damn cool.
I'm starting a category for recipes, since I kind of collect them on and off. But I figured I should share the ones that I really enjoy. First off is my dad's favorite brownies. Supposedly his mother gave my mom this recipe when they got married.
2 sq. unsweetened chocolate
2 Tablespoons butter
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup flour
1 t. vanilla
Pre-heat oven to 350 - 375
Butter and flour an 8" square pan (Note, you don't want to use a pan any bigger then 8")
Melt chocolate and butter over low heat. Set aside.
Beat eggs and sugar until well blended.
Add vanilla and chocolate and butter mixture.
Gently mix in flour.
Spread batter in prepared pan.
Bake for just 20 minutes.
I dig this recipe too. The brownies it makes are quite rich!
Yet more shady web dealings
Over at Evhead is yet another example of people using what I'd consider just really slimy spamming practices.
Why do people feel the need to go and spam one person's customers just to try and gain some customers of their own. Yet another example of the lame things still happening on the web these days.
I just wish companies that do things like this could be publicly ridiculed. Unfortunately, I doubt it would make a difference.
What the?
I stumbled across The Friday Five from visiting a life uncommon. The Friday Five is one of those things that makes blogging interesting for me. I get to answer questions that give people glimpses into my life that I might not normally think to give. (A big thanks to Heather for doing it btw.)
Now today I end up getting this email from jfcates@netscape.net:
If you get a kick out of the friday five here's yesterday's Testzone post on the Tuesday too. IT'S TONIGHT
Tuesday Too
Yes it's going to happen! Approximately one minute after Midnight Eastern Standard Time on Tuesday the 19th return here to get the first too questions. The too will actually be three and sometimes four questions, because it's too as in too many, not two as in 2. After you've posted your answers return to the Tuesday Too post, and leave your name and URL in the comment. Yeah, I know those west coasters will have an advantage; they don't have to stay up till midnight to grab the questions. What the hell?! This person went and took ALL the email addresses from people who responded to the friday five and spammed them with an ad to visit their web site. This is just so damn uncool. I'm glad my address is changing. And I guess I've learned my lesson about posting my email address to people's comments.

My Radio Archive Idea
So the idea that I was talking about below was kind of a minor tweak to how Radio publishes archives. It's actually very cool they way they get built up. In your web home directory it creates a folder for the year, and then a subfolder for each month. In that subfolder it then has files 01.html, 02.html, etc. One file for each day you posted something. (So if you didn't post anything on the 5th, there's no 05.html).
The issue came when I started thinking about how to link to these archives. Idea one is having a page that lists a calendar for each month in the archive (like the one on the right). My only concern there is that it might be slow due to being so table heavy (I plan to try and see today). So one thought I had was to just list every month I have an archive and point it to the archives.
Here's where I ran into a small stumbling point. The first day in each archive month folder is the first day in that month you posted. So if I didn't post till the 6th of the month, there are no files for all the days earlier. This would mean that I'd have to go through all my archives and see what the first day I posted was.
So, my solution was a simple one. Each month subfolder should have an index.html that equates to the first day in the month a post occured. So in the above case, there'd be an index.html that was the same thing as the 06.html file. That way, you could easily point someone at the archive page for a month by just sending them to http://[website]/2001/10/ and you wouldn't need to worry about anything else.
My Radio Project
Well, I think I know what my first 'project' in Radio 8 is going to be. An archive page. See that keen calendar to the right? I want to try and create a dynamic page that lists a calendar for every month that I have posts.
My big concern is that a page like that would be insanely table heavy. I guess the other possibility is that I have a page that lists all the months of my archive, but the way Radio stores its archives makes that a little bit more difficult.
I emailed Dave Winer asking what the best place to send 'feature requests' for Radio to and mentioned an idea I had for how Radio publishes archives.

mmm Lazy mornings
Having holidays is good. All weekend I just couldn't really snap into that frame of mind that I had today off. But, this morning when my alarm went off at its ultra-early time I just shut it off and went back to sleep till 8:30. For me that's like sleeping till noon. I also woke up to it being nice and sunny out. It's only 33 degrees F out, but it looks nice and pretty. I hope that it is due to warm up some today.
New Email
My email address is changing. If you're a friend of mine and don't hear from me with the new one in a week or so, drop me a line and I'll make sure you get it.
This is all happening because I'm losing my gblake@mediaone.net address. AT&T is losing the rights to that domain name. In some ways it sucks cause I have had that address for ages. The new address I'm choosing is my own domain, so as long as I have someone to forward mail for me it will work.
Anime Night
At brunch today my friend Becky and I got to talking about anime and ways that it tells stories in different ways and includes different themes then most american animation. So she came by early tonight and we watched a few different things. I showed her some lighter stuff like Cardcaptor Sakura, as well as some fairly dark things like Boogiepop Phantom.
We also talked about starting up a weekly anime night for a few of us to get together and watch things. I think it would be kind of cool. I've tried to do it before, but it's just kind of hard to keep it scheduled sometime. I think this time it may work.
I hate
Web services that require me to open up more holes in my firewall to use. Is there a good solution for this? I hate having to open up more and more holds, it's just more and more places for security holes to creep in.
One thing that might be an interesting solution is some kind of switchboard service. Basicly it is a server that passes off messages between machines that are behind firewalls. It's similar to a proxy server, but has some intelligence there to hold onto messages and pass them on to a specific user that is connected to it.
The program using the service would then ping the server every minute (or longer if it doesn't have to be instantaneous) and see if there were any messages for it. Those messages could be something like an IM, and XML-RPC or SOAP call, or anything similar to that.
Of course the other big problem with this is coming up with something that everyone would buy into so that we don't end up having a bunch of different services all offering kind of the same thing.
What brought this up? There's at least one new thing for Radio I can't do without opening up some holes in my firewall at home and at work.
Why we blog
I posted about the Blogger's Manifesto the other day. Someone has gone and posted the Real Blogger's Manifesto.
Another Quiet Weekend
Once again, a nice quiet weekend. This one has just been spent catching up on things. Catching up on my DVDs, catching up on reading, etc. Not catching up on sleep though. I only got five hours sleep the last two nights, though I feel a nap coming on right now. Maybe nap for two hours and then head out for a little bit of breakfast and sleep until the afternoon.
On the DVD watching front I'm almost through the 6th Kenshin DVD and from what I've read this is the end of the first arc of the series. From what I understand things get a little bit more intense after this. I can't wait. Now that I think of it. I also have to start watching Noir again. I got a little stuck at around episode 12, but I think this would be a good weekend to finish it off.

The need to spin
I spun a short little set online tonight. It was kind of cool. I hadn't done it forever and I was all over the place, but it was really fun.
I need to do that again soon.
A PayPal day
Well, first when I went to my mail I had envelope from PayPal that said something like "Important information for PayPal customers". What was it you ask? A fricken Providian credit card application. Bah.
Evan from Blogger is also having problems with PayPal. When Paypal first arrived on the internet scene I thought they were pretty cool. Back then they had a setup for making payments between friends using your Palm Pilot. It was pretty keen. I've used paypal more then a few times as an easy way to pay friends for things like theatre tickets or for my part of dinner. But I keep hearing more and more stories of people having major problems with them. Problems that just seem like they shouldn't be problems when you read about them.
I don't use PayPal that often, but I'm definitely going to be keeping my eye out for other options.

Things my TiVo thought I'd like
Things listed multiple times have been recorded multiple times, this was taken right from the TiVo screen. Usually there are one or two weird ones in there like "The History of Turnips" or something. Interestingly enough these are all things I might be interested in watching. Isn't technology cool?
Things I hate
Feeling this fragile. An old friend from San Diego is in town tonight and he's heading out clubbing with some other folks I know. And I just know going out would take too much out of me. It drives me kind of nuts. Most of the time I don't mind too much, but sometimes I just get so upset by it all

Friday Five
1. What was the first thing you ever cooked? I don't think that this was the first first thing I ever made, but it is the first I remember. When I was around 11 I decided that I wanted chocolate chip cookies when mom was out shopping. So I tried making some. They would have been great except that I put in too much salt. The next batch a year or two later was much better.
2. What's your signature dish? Hmm. I'm not sure. I've got a few different things I can make pretty well, but nothing specific. Chicken Francaise, Pancakes, and Grilled cheese to name a few(not all at once though). I also make a pretty kickass mac and cheese.
3. Ever had a cooking disaster? (tasted like crap, didn't work, etc.) Describe. The cookies mentioned above were probably the worst. The funny thing was that I hid them and my mom found them a day or so later (I don't know why I didn't just THROW THEM AWAY). She was amused.
4. If skill and money were no object, what would you make for your dream meal? Augh, that's a hard one. There are so many things I'd like to try making. I think I'd end up spending a week going through the various cookbooks I have. There are so many things I'd love to try. The one that most comes to mind is doing a shoulder of lamb. When I was in London for work a few years back a co-worker invited me to a dinner party he was having and served it. It was really good, it just takes quite a while to cook.
5. What are you doing this weekend? I'm not sure what's going on this weekend. I'm thinking I may try and find some friends to hang out with tonight, then just kind of mellow over the weekend. I've stopped saying I'm going to try and make a mix, since that just hasn't worked in a while. I may do a netcast though, it's been a long time since I've done one.

Audiotron Need
I have decided that I want to get an Audiotron with some of my tax return. I almost picked up one last night, but Microcenter was just too expensive. Especially when I found it online for a good $40 less. I am going to order it today and hopefully have it next week.
Though now I'm wondering if I can remote control the web service.

In-N-Out Codes
Anyone who has lived in Southern California is familiar with In-N-Out (it's what a hamburger's all about). But for those of you who only visit, here's a guide for ordering that'll make people think you've been going there your whole life.
My personal favorite order is a Double Double Animal Style, hold the tomatos, fries well done, and a coke.
What a messed up world
A man shot his girlfriend because he thought she was going to say the words "New Jersey". He also responds to other words violently, like "snickers". Even though the article made me laugh a lot, I truely hope this guy is locked in an asylum for the rest of his life.
Bunny Death
The Bunny Survival Test page's purpose is to determine specific weaknesses and/or strengths posessed by "Marshmallow Bunnies." I liked the radiation tolerence test myself.
SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21) - Week of February 14, 2002
Happy Valentine's Day, Scorpio! How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. First, I love how you have desires for seemingly impossible things. It's your most scary and winsome quality. But there are so many other weirdly adorable things about you, too. I love how you don't run away from the cracks that open up in the world but brazenly peer into them to scope out the mysteries that lie on the other side. I love the fact that you seem to be the reincarnation of a sacred temple prostitute who is hell-bent on expressing your exotic wisdom in this profane world. I'm even delighted when you brilliantly analyze the clockwork of the universe so that you can mess with that clockwork.

The Blogger's Manifesto
Chris Pirillo posts
The Blogger's Manifesto. The coming Comcast hell
CNET News.com has an article up on comcast: Comcast privacy move its latest woe. The company's decision under fire to stop storing Web users' data is only the latest dust-up for the cable giant that's struggling to move customers onto its new network.
I am very much dreading the switch to Comcast. As is stated by someone in the article. I'm paying the same amount for a lower level of service. It sounds like they are going to not allow VPN access. Though I'm really not sure how they are doing this. If it just a policy or what. I'm sure I'm going to lose having a DNS (Mediaone let you choose your hostname on your network when I started.) Newsgroups are going away, I didn't use them much, but there were support ones for Mediaone that were handy.
I have a feeling I'm going to be looking for new options. Most likely I'd go with something like DSL. I'm not sure that RCN is an option for me because I have Digital Cable, and I really like having digital cable. This whole thing just sucks. I will probably wait and see how bad it is and then decide.
Heck, I'd even be willing to pay a little bit more, not much, but a little bit. It's weird how different people view home internet access from how we view it from work. If I want access for work I pay a premium for it. We pay for T1 lines, service, etc. A bill that would come to over $1,000/month. For home service, I get T1 speeds and pay $45/month. And then I get pissed off when I don't get at least as good service as what I'm paying over $1,000/month for. In some ways it makes me question the cost of that high speed access at work. The whole biz is a mess.

First iMac Sighting
I stopped by MicroCenter today on the way home and they had an iMac there. It was pretty cool looking, though. The base was bigger then I thought it would be, but still, it wasn't really that bad. It takes up less space then a monitor though. The arm for the screen also looks much sturdier then I thought it would.
Anime Thoughts
I've been watching Love Hina with my friend Chris. I've been supplying her with anime for the last few months. Mostly stuff I have that she wanted to see some of and some stuff at random that I like.
I think Love Hina may be breaking her some (She reads this so I'm sure I'm going to get abuse for saying anything). I actually love the series, but I think it's a little too random for her. I better not show her FLCL, I think I'd get hurt. On the other hand, I think it does help show that there are all different kinds of anime, Enough so that it's hard to just group it into all one classification.
Book Note
I finished reading A Fire Upon the Deep this morning while waiting to see the doctor. I'm glad to be done with it because I didn't think it was that great. A friend of mine recommended it to me a few years ago and I wanted to read it all the way through to see what I thought of it. I kind of liked the concepts a little, but it just didn't click with me. I've heard lots of good things about the next book in my queue. Hopefully that will pull me in a little bit more.
Back from the Doc's
Nothing new this time around. Everything was basicly the same. Though that's been usual lately. It's just a lot of waiting these days.
Off to the Doctor's
Today is medical day. First I have to head out to Pulmonary Rehab (I should explain what that is like sometime, though it really is pretty boring), then it's off to my every other month appointment at the lung transplant clinic, THEN I end off by going to see my pulmonologist for the first time in months.
I'm sure my pulmonologist is going to give me a hard time about not having been in in so long. But he makes it difficult because he always asks me to schedule an appointment for a time that he doesn't have his schedule online for. Which means I usually have to call back once or twice to find out if he has updated it. And then I end up forgetting. I have to stop being so scatterbrained (or maybe I should just accept that I am and wallow in it).
QOTD

Off to sleep early tonight. Gotta make every effort to get up for rehab in the morning.
New iMac ads
Apple has posted some new ads for the iMac. They're definitely.... cute.
The price of Replay
In reading more about Replay I came across their pricing. A 40 hour model is $699. Not a bad price, it is close to the equivilant of TiVo with a lifetime subscription (Replay doesn't have a monthly subscription fee). The thing I don't get is the price jump from a 40 hour Replay to 80 hour to 160 hour to 320 hour.
Anyone out there have a Replay? Is the difference between all these models just more disc? If so, $1000 to go from an 80 hour to a 320 hour just seems obscene. Disk is obscenely cheap these days. You can get an IBM 60 gig drive for probably around $140 retail. And I'm sure they aren't putting like 4 or 5 60 gig drives.
So why so expensive? Is it worth THAT much?
The PVR battle
The Shifted Librarian had a link to an article about the battle between sudios and ReplayTV. While online last night I was talking about it with some friends and some interesting points were brought up.
First off. I love my TiVo and never ever want to give it up. It has completely changed how I watch TV. But in talking last night, we went to extremes a bit. One difference between ReplayTV and TiVo is that Replay gives options to completely skip commercials. You basicly don't even know they are there. Quite handy from a user perspective. TiVo lets you fast forward through them. From an advertiser perspective, neither is that great, but TiVo is less threatening, it's the same as what people have been doing with VCRs for years.
Now, let's say Replay and similar devices were able to get significant market penetration. And then in response, advertisers become less willing to pay the huge fees for advertising (since more and more people don't even see even see them. How much would you be willing to pay for your normal television watching? How much would you be willing to spend a month for your TV to be completely ad free? For the record, I don't think this will happen anytime soon. Replay is still too expensive for Joe Q Public.
This is probably my biggest concern with all this. Networks do make tons of cash through advertising. Look at the cost of some of these shows to the networks.
On the other side, I think the arguments that are being made by the studios are lame. They are attacking it on the basis of people being able to record their own digital copy of shows like X-Files to archive, saying that this will hurt sales of these shows on DVD. IMHO, not really. In many cases the quality of recording provided on DVD surpases the quality of stuff broadcasted (even over digital cable or satellite).
I think we're in for quite the interesting trip, one that it makes sense to watch very closely.
(Damn, I ended up rambling a lot on that)
Recent Music Purchases
I picked up a few cool CDs over the last few days. I'm still working my way through all of them, but I've sampled a bit of each of them.
Chocolate?!?!
Heinz, the ketchup company, is planning releasing a line of 'frozen potato products' called Funky Fries. Flavors include Sour Cream and Chives (doesn't sound too bad) and Cocoa Crispers (I think I may be ill), which are chocolate french fries. There's also one that is colored sky blue.
What is this big thing with oddly colored food?
We are now archived
Over the weekend instructions were posted on how to import old blogger posts into Radio. I have to say I'm quite impressed with how well this tool worked. The only big issue is that all my old comments are lost. I may try and come up with some kind of way to transfer them over, but it isn't easy since the blogids have changed. Anyway, if you are interested, here is my very first blog post.
I hate rain
At least, right now I do. I hate it on days like this where it is just grey and dark. It is especially bad in the winter because everything is so brown. Driving in I just realized I'm sick of this weather. I want it to be nice and warm out again. I want to be able to wake up on a Saturday morning and go down to au bon pain and have a cup of coffee while sitting outside and reading and watching people in Harvard Square

I hear breakfast calling
My parents are supposed to come up sometime today, but haven't given any indication of when they will be arriving. My apartment is right on the edge of being where I want it to be. I have a little bit more cleaning and organizing and it willb e perfect. I think i actually may even still have some things to put into storage, but only a few last things.
I seem to have somehow gotten myself onto a schedule where I am waking up at 7 in the morning without trying. While I don't mind this as much during the week on the weekends it is quite annoying. I think I'm going to run out to Rosebud for some breakfast then try and sneak in a small nap before my parents arrive
Coolest Flash Thing I've Ever Seen
Wow, This has to be one of the funkiest things I've ever seen done with Flash. (Obviously, it requires flash :))
How come nobody told me
That Lenore #9 was out? I was in the comic store for the first time in ages today and looked up and saw it sitting right there on the shelves. I quickly grabbed a copy and scurried out the door to read it.
Friday Five
1. What's the most romantic thing you've ever done for something else Hmmm. I'm not sure. When I'm in a relationship I tend to do lots of little things. I listen for the little things my SO likes and try to suprise her with them.
2. What are your erogenous zones? Hmm. My neck or scalp probably. (I've been single so long I can't remember ;))
3. How old were you the first time you had sex? Care to expound? I was 20. Not much to say there.>
4. What's the most unusual place you've ever had sex? On top of a kind of shed-thing that was surrounded by trees so that we could see out but people couldn't see in.
5. Do you have any plans for Valentine's Day or is it just another Thursday? I'm thinking about getting one of those valentines bears and lighting it on fire.

Rise and Shine
Mmmm Friday. And not just Friday, an off Friday. Work has been very stressful for me lately. There's just a lot going on and I feel like if I don't stay on top of things they will fall apart. Isn't that usually the first sign that you need a vacation? I think it's also because we're in the middle of a project and getting close to our first deadline. My team is basicly ready, but after every other product rollout I am so skeptical about how well it will all work. But that's something to talk about another time.
Right now I'm getting ready to head out to Pulmonary Rehab. Wow, twice in one week. I've been finding it is easier for me to wake up these days and I think that some of it because the days are getting longer. When I wake up now the sun is just starting to come up and things aren't dark out. I never realized how much I seem to be effected by that cycle. (Is it an age thing?)
Once again
i keep wondering if maybe there is some alarm that goes off at 2am. Though this time I woke up, went to the bathroom, crawled back into bed, then from nowhere went into a huge coughing fit. Ugs, well, I'm waiting till my chest feels a little bit more relaxed before crawling back into bed
Hmm, I wonder if I should start recording things like this in my lung blog.
The Votes are In
And people are overwhelmingly against the DOJ/Microsoft settlement. Out of around 30,000 responses half of them were against the deal, 7,500 were for it, and another 7,000 were thrown out for just saying things like "I hate Microsoft".
I can't help it. I had to laugh.
Jumpin on the bandwagon
How well do you know me? Take my friends test and find out.
Losin it
I hadn't weighed myself in a while. This morning I got on the scale and was happy to see it reported my weight at 169. I was quite happy with this. My target is 160, so hopefully I can get down to that much. My waist is already down a size in the last few months. Not bad for someone who can't really exercise much.
SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21) - Week of February 7, 2002
English poet, essayist, and conversationalist Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) used to say that humans need to be reminded more than instructed. I often have the sense that this is my greatest gift to you: not so much as a teacher, but as a friendly pest who pushes you to remember what you already know. Here's this week's memo: You inevitably feel most at home in the world when you penetrate surface appearances and rummage around for hidden truths in the depths.

I knew there had to be a catch
Microsoft has posted a Security Bulletin for Office v.X. Office has this piracy protection 'feature' that when you run it, it looks to see if any other copies of it are running on your network with the same license key. It's kind of annoying. I wonder if they make a bulk license version that only uses one key (Imagine trying to manage an office of anything more then 5 people with this). Anyways, it seems that there's a bug in the feature that lets people send a packet to a machine running office trips the feature. Making Office suddenly shut down, giving the user no chance to save their work.
Now I like Office v.X a lot. I think MS's Mac group did a great job on it, but it's details like this that keep reaffirming my poor attitude towards Microsoft. Thank god OSX has a built-in firewall so I can block that protection check.

Fashion goes hi-tech. This could be quite cool. You could always be wired.
One of those days
Today feels like it is going to be one of those days. I've been at work already and I'm already feeling stressed. Once again, some of our code is crapping out. I'm more likely to blame our code then anything else. I hate doing that, but given the past history of things sometimes I jump to that conclusion.
I also know that I'll probably be a little tired by the time I get home tonight because it was one of those early days. I went to sleep early so that I could make it to pulmonary rehab. And this time I actually made it! I always do feel better after going though, so I am glad.

Life without net
Last night around 9:30 AT&T in my area partially dropped off the net. It was weird because I could still get to their nameservers, and their mail servers (I had mail coming in), but I couldn't get outside of whatever network area that was. It was pretty annoying. I'm back now.
Gentlemen, Start your Lomos
I'm psyched. I picked up some Fuji 100 speed film on my way home (supposedly one of the optimum films to use for the Lomo). And I snapped a few pictures while I was walking through the Mall I was in, this time very aware of the 'click-click' of the shutter. I feel excited about my camera again and plan on taking a few rolls fairly quickly to get a feel for using it again.
Cold Again
My office is MUCH too cold these days. Everything is fine till about two in the afternoon, at which point the temperature drops. It's really annoying because suddenly I'm sitting there shivering. My fingers are even cold. I think about putting on my gloves while I sit here typing away.
I'm considering a small side project here at work. Something to do an intranet that will let various groups work on their own sections of the intranet. But first there needs to be some kind of framework that holds it all together.

Wooo Hooo indeed!
John Robb posts: Wooo hooo. Netflix now has an east coast distribution facility in MA (Worcester). That shaves 4 days off of the turn around on my movies! Funny, that they didn't announce it to members.
It's about time. This has been one of my biggest complaints about Netflix in the past. I would rent stuff and it would take at least a week to get something back, while friends of mine who lived out west would have things back within days. Big bonus points to Netflix for giving their product more value to me.
I should give up and go to sleep
But I ran into one more thing to talk about. Over on the radio-dev list, Dave posted a link to a newbie needing some help. Right here I found the best decription of some of my Radio frustrations to date.
Out of the box, Radio is a wonderful, easy to use, weblogging tool. You can be up and running in seconds. And if all you care about is working on your blog and doing regular posts to it, you'll never have any issues. But one of the cool things about Radio to me is that there is this whole scripting environment behind it. The only problem is, finding documentation on it. There are a few tutorials on the Radio home page, but there was nothing easily available that really explained the different parts of it. I kept feeling like I was seeing part of a big picture and it would never quite fully come into focus.
There is a lot written about what you can do with Radio and its language, UserTalk, but it is all reached through searching for things. Which, if you don't have enough background on how it all works can be a bit daunting. In a lot of ways it reminds me of my early days with various MUD servers, specificly the ones like MOO. MOO is a MUD server where the core program handles network connections and interpreting the MOO programming language (I'm not too sure of the internals and may be simplifying it, but that's the gist of it). So everything from the concept of what is a character to what is a location is programmed within the database for a world. Once again, there's a lot of stuff out there to work with, but the only way to figure it out is to sit down and really take the whole thing apart, or to have a really good guide.
Radio needs a better initial guide. Something that gives a more general view of how it all fits together. My guess is that it already exists, I've just missed the link someplace, or haven't come across it. I think the current tutorials are actually great, they have helped in my understanding of things, but there's still more background information I crave. I responded to the intial mail to the mailing list about this with these thoughts. One thing I like about the whole Userland crew is that they seem very receptive to peoples comments. They really are aware of what their users thing (at least as long as they voice their opinions).
One last thing
I thought Angel last night was amazing. There were parts of the episode that just made me shiver. And I found myself cursing Joss for somehow making me care about a few characters who I had formerly found to be silly and trivial.
Once again, we find ourselfs
Up again for a moment in the middle of the night. It is weird how often this seems to happen. I was having kind of funky dreams as I woke up. Last night as I went to sleep I was reading the translation of the Utena manga. It is interesting because it is yet another retelling of the Utena story. This one gives us a bit more history at the beginning instead of thrusting us right into the story as the TV series or the movie do. Anyways, I seem to remember my dream being visually like the manga, almost like I was dreaming in a drawings. Very cool, but different.
I played around with my Lomo tonight. I had been reading about how someone had just gotten hers fixed and she was trying it out and listening for a second 'click'. When i read this I paused a moment. Second click? It all sounded like one to me when I took pictures. Since I didn't have any film in my lomo at the moment I was able to fool around for a bit. When you set the camera to 'A', it keeps the shutter open for as long as it thinks it needs for the picture based on the amount of light. To test this I put my hand in front of the lens and took a picture and sure enough, click (pause) click. I feel like I suddenly have more understanding of this cool little thing I bought a while back. (And I hope I don't sound like too much an idiot to all you other lomo users out there).
Okay, now that I've rambled enough about my night I'm going to put the computer aside and fall back into sleepyland. Goodnight.
Teacher Madness
The Guardian reports a teacher cleared of sex with boys. I think the best part of the article was the part where "She said she wore a see-through shirt and black bra to the party, that she could be a flirt and should have avoided compromising situations with her pupils". Wow. I never had any teachers like that. Though come to think of it, I don't think I had many (any?) teachers at all that I would have wanted to see in something like that.
If you are a raver, this could save your life
I've been a raver for years. I think once you become one, you never fully stop being one (even if you don't go out quite as often). But now I've found that raves are actually All-night-dance-parties of DEATH. Damn, I never knew!
Sifl. And. Olly. Sifl and Olly Shooow
My copy of Sifl and Olly - Season Three (The Lost Episodes) arrived today. I can't wait to get home and watch it. The box even says it has the video for United States of Whatever, one of my favorite songs from the series.
Hungry
I'm going nuts and am not going to have time to go out and get anything. Time for the joy of delivery food. I just need to find someplace that takes credit cards.
SupaBowl
As I said, I'm not a huge fan of sports in general. But I must say, I really enjoyed watching the superbowl this year. We were mostly watching the commercials, but the game itself was pretty fun. And hey, WE WON!
Metropolis
Saturday night Emily called me to see if I wanted to go with them to see Metropolis at a local theatre. I was kind of bummed that I was down in CT because I really want to go see it, and am not sure who would be up for going with me normally. I think I'm going to try and go Monday night.
Super
It's superbowl sunday. I really am not a big fan of sports. I don't mind catching a baseball game now and then, but I've just never gotten into it all much. I'd much rather go to the movies. Tonight I'm going over to my friend Becky's place to watch the super bowl commercials with a bunch of other people. It should be pretty fun.
Blue Stuff
I was just watching Food TV with my mom and commercial came on for 'Super Blue Stuff'. It's supposed to relieve joint pain or something like that. I just could never see buying something called 'Super Blue Stuff'.
Lazy Days
Today was a day to catch up on rest. I was up fairly early and drove down to CT to hang out with my mom. I always hate driving down here in the winter because everything is so brown. There are no leaves on the trees and it just looks so bleak. I only really like it if it has snowed sometime just before I travel, because then it just looks so cool. It wasn't like that today. There were some cool looking trees that seemed to be partly covered in ice, but I wasn't able to pull over and get any pictures.
There's something about being down at my parent's place that always makes me just relax though. I sat down to read while my mom was at the museum giving a tour and just passed out. I didn't think I was that tired, but I slept for a good hour and a half. Then I watched the end of Gasaraki.
I'm still not quite sure what I think of Gasaraki. It was very engaging and I kept finding myself sucked into it, but I am still not sure I fully understand it. I need to go back and watch the whole thing through again.
I'm working on this post offline, one neat feature of Radio is that I can work on posts offline and when I am back online they will all sync up and get pushed out to my web server. I really like that idea because it lets me keep writing and posting things. And it all gets saved till later.
Tonight It's off for sushi and then maybe watching some TV. One thing I don't like about coming down to Hartford is that I don't know much of what there is to do here. So I tend to feel tied down to my parent's place.
On a roll
Damn. i was certainly on a major blogging roll today. I just kept posting and posting. Hopefully I'll calm down for the weekend. I'll be down in CT, so may be writing a bunch of posts remotely, we'll see

Cold Office
My office is way too cold. I'm sitting here at my desk with a jacket on because I'm freezing. I wish it didn't always get so cold here in the afternoons. It is like noon comes and the heat gets turned off. If it doesn't get better soon I think I'm going to go home. It's a pretty quiet day today anyways. I'm actually thinking of trying to do some redesign on our intranet.
I also have a craving for a baked potato with melted cheese on it. (That doesn't have much to do with being cold, but I just felt like saying it)
More Blog Awards?
This time, it's the Anti-Bloggies. I actually love a lot of these categories. My favorites being: Biggest Stalker, best use of blog for personal benefit, and Worst Cafe Press Gear.
Hmm, maybe I should find one to nominate myself for, maybe most likely to have a cheese sandwich.

Revisiting old mixes
I uploaded some slightly higher quality versions of I, Gregory and Sunrise today, as well as a version of Once Upon a Time. They are available on the DJ page. I've been relistening to my mixes a bunch lately to get some inspiration for a new one. I just haven't had the time to play with it all lately. And my headphones are even still over at my friend Heather's place from new years.
Also, if anyone wants a CD of I, Gregory, Sunrise, or Spring, drop me a line and I'll try and get one out to you.
Book of the moment
While browsing around this morning, I found a link to this book. I'm not really sure what else there is to say about it, I just loved the title.
Friday Five
1. Have you ever had Braces? Any other teeth Trauma I hever had braces, but I did have a bunch of cavities as a kid. I still need to get back to the dentist sometime soon, it's been years.
2. Ever broken any bones? Nope. I've been banged up pretty bad from various bike accidents, but nothing ever broke.
3. Ever had stitches? I've had them a bunch of times. I had a mole or two removed, and then most recently I had a lung biopsy which gave me three small ones.
4. What are the stories behind some of your [physical] scars? No real stories. i've got a few here and there that I really couldn't even tell you where they came from (like one small one on a finger that's been there forever).
5. How do you plan to spend your weekend? I haven't though much about it. I'm planning on going down to CT to visit with my mom if the weather isn't too bad. My dad is down in New Orleans right now visiting my sister, so I thought it would be cool to head down to CT saturday morning and come back Sunday. I'm still not too sure about what I'm doing for the superbowl. I am thinking of TiVoing the whole thing then fast forwarding through it. i wonder how quickly I could watch it then. I'll probably end up at my friend Becky's place though.

Taxes Done
Yay! I got my W-2. And promptly sat down and did my taxes. I'm getting a little something back this year and can't decided if I should save it or get myself a little present of some kind. I keep finding myself eyeing that Audiotron.
