New Citizenship Oath

Somehow this slipped by me when reading the news, but there is a new citizenship oath that was supposed to debut on Wednesday. For the moment it appears blocked. Here are some bits from the AP news story.

Attempt to simplify citizenship oath thwarted by complaints

WASHINGTON -- An attempt to revise the U.S. citizenship oath to make it more meaningful has stalled.

Some conservatives said the changes would weaken a pledge to serve in the military and eliminate a promise to bear arms.

The revision removed a line pledging to "renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty.''

It also eliminated a vow to "bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by law,'' and rewrote a section pledging to serve in the Armed Forces when required by law. [News 8 Austin]
