    Yet more shady web dealings

Over at Evhead is yet another example of people using what I’d consider just really slimy spamming practices.

Why do people feel the need to go and spam one person’s customers just to try and gain some customers of their own. Yet another example of the lame things still happening on the web these days.

I just wish companies that do things like this could be publicly ridiculed. Unfortunately, I doubt it would make a difference.

    What the?

I stumbled across The Friday Five from visiting a life uncommon. The Friday Five is one of those things that makes blogging interesting for me. I get to answer questions that give people glimpses into my life that I might not normally think to give. (A big thanks to Heather for doing it btw.)

Now today I end up getting this email from jfcates@netscape.net:

If you get a kick out of the friday five here’s yesterday’s Testzone post on the Tuesday too. IT’S TONIGHT

    Tuesday Too

Yes it’s going to happen! Approximately one minute after Midnight Eastern Standard Time on Tuesday the 19th return here to get the first too questions. The too will actually be three and sometimes four questions, because it’s too as in too many, not two as in 2. After you’ve posted your answers return to the Tuesday Too post, and leave your name and URL in the comment. Yeah, I know those west coasters will have an advantage; they don’t have to stay up till midnight to grab the questions. We’re tough here on the east coast; so we’re giving you laid backers a break.

Here’s the URL: [url snipped by me -greg]

What the hell?! This person went and took ALL the email addresses from people who responded to the friday five and spammed them with an ad to visit their web site. This is just so damn uncool. I’m glad my address is changing. And I guess I’ve learned my lesson about posting my email address to people’s comments.

    Place yer bets!

So i discovered I had misplaced my ATM card. I think I left it in the ATM machine on Saturday. How much do you want to bet that now that I cancelled it I’ll find it in the next 4 hours?

    Wow

I just got in from getting a coffee and a coffeecake muffin (mmmm) from Dunkin Donuts and it is beautiful out. I think I’m going to head into Harvard square about noon and enjoy the day while taking pictures.

My new mug rules too btw.

  • My Radio Archive IdeaSo the

    My Radio Archive Idea

So the idea that I was talking about below was kind of a minor tweak to how Radio publishes archives. It’s actually very cool they way they get built up. In your web home directory it creates a folder for the year, and then a subfolder for each month. In that subfolder it then has files 01.html, 02.html, etc. One file for each day you posted something. (So if you didn’t post anything on the 5th, there’s no 05.html).

The issue came when I started thinking about how to link to these archives. Idea one is having a page that lists a calendar for each month in the archive (like the one on the right). My only concern there is that it might be slow due to being so table heavy (I plan to try and see today). So one thought I had was to just list every month I have an archive and point it to the archives.

Here’s where I ran into a small stumbling point. The first day in each archive month folder is the first day in that month you posted. So if I didn’t post till the 6th of the month, there are no files for all the days earlier. This would mean that I’d have to go through all my archives and see what the first day I posted was.

So, my solution was a simple one. Each month subfolder should have an index.html that equates to the first day in the month a post occured. So in the above case, there’d be an index.html that was the same thing as the 06.html file. That way, you could easily point someone at the archive page for a month by just sending them to http://[website]/2001/10/ and you wouldn’t need to worry about anything else.

  • My Radio ProjectWell, I think

    My Radio Project

Well, I think I know what my first ‘project’ in Radio 8 is going to be. An archive page. See that keen calendar to the right? I want to try and create a dynamic page that lists a calendar for every month that I have posts.

My big concern is that a page like that would be insanely table heavy. I guess the other possibility is that I have a page that lists all the months of my archive, but the way Radio stores its archives makes that a little bit more difficult.

I emailed Dave Winer asking what the best place to send ‘feature requests’ for Radio to and mentioned an idea I had for how Radio publishes archives.

    mmm Lazy mornings

Having holidays is good. All weekend I just couldn’t really snap into that frame of mind that I had today off. But, this morning when my alarm went off at its ultra-early time I just shut it off and went back to sleep till 8:30. For me that’s like sleeping till noon. I also woke up to it being nice and sunny out. It’s only 33 degrees F out, but it looks nice and pretty. I hope that it is due to warm up some today.

    New Email

My email address is changing. If you’re a friend of mine and don’t hear from me with the new one in a week or so, drop me a line and I’ll make sure you get it.

This is all happening because I’m losing my gblake@mediaone.net address. AT&T is losing the rights to that domain name. In some ways it sucks cause I have had that address for ages. The new address I’m choosing is my own domain, so as long as I have someone to forward mail for me it will work.

    Anime Night

At brunch today my friend Becky and I got to talking about anime and ways that it tells stories in different ways and includes different themes then most american animation. So she came by early tonight and we watched a few different things. I showed her some lighter stuff like Cardcaptor Sakura, as well as some fairly dark things like Boogiepop Phantom.

We also talked about starting up a weekly anime night for a few of us to get together and watch things. I think it would be kind of cool. I’ve tried to do it before, but it’s just kind of hard to keep it scheduled sometime. I think this time it may work.
